What is hardfork?

A hardfork is the branching of the network that occurs as a result of global updates to the blockchain. During the upgrade, all users must switch to a new, developer-improved version of the software.

The London hardfork is the next planned step for the transition to Ethereum 2.0. It introduces changes that will qualitatively affect scalability, as well as allows the network to evolve at an even greater pace.
